In honour of Juneteenth – a holiday commemorating the emancipation of slaves in the United States—Beyoncé surprised fans with her new song “Black Parade”. The song, produced by Derek Dixie, is a celebration of blackness and pays homage to Beyoncé’s roots as a black woman and her hometown – Houston, Texas.
“Happy Juneteenth Weekend! I hope we continue to share joy and celebrate each other, even in the midst of struggle. Please continue to remember our beauty, strength and power,” Beyoncé wrote in an Instagram post announcing the song.
It’s not lost on us that “Black Parade” dropped at a very momentous time- especially with the heightened racial tensions in America and people continuing to fight against injustice and police brutality across the country.
Shortly before releasing the song, the singer also launched Black Parade Route, an online directory of black-owned businesses. According to her website, the initiative will benefit a Black Business Impact Fund through the star’s BeyGOOD Foundation, which will “support Black-owned small businesses in need.”

“Being Black is your activism. Black excellence is a form of protest. Black joy is your right,”
